AN OLD LANDMARK.

Sir*—l wish to draw attention to an old landmark whose fate seems impending. It is the old cabbage tree m Mtnukau Road, opposite the Newmarket School. With the present widening of the road and the consequent moving back of the boundary fences the tree will come m the middle of the new footpath, and it is to be hoped that the City Council will spa.ro it. Though not such a fine specimen as the large one which grew almost which Hochstetter especially, noticed- in his early boo on New Zealand it is probablv quite as venerable; and it should not suffer the fate of the other historic tree which was unfortunately felled some years ago before public attention was drawn to it.
