TAUMARUNI TOWNSHIP.
A NATIVE PETITION. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.! TAUMARUNUI, Friday. A petition signed by 35 native owners of shares in the township of Taumanmui was presented to Parliament to-day by Sir M. Pomare. The petition states that land in the township has been taken by tho Crown for recreation reserves, borough endowments,' public buildings, school reserves and ballast reserve. The petitioners believe that proper inquiries should be instituted in reference to the taking of these lands and the amount of compensation properly payable % to the owners, and suggest that the * compenfeation should bo paid to the owners or tho land revested in such owners. They also believe that for some year.s the native owners in the township have been charged £800 per annum for graduated land tax on a gross valuation which pirobably included these ( reserves. Proper inquiry :s therefore desired.
