A CONVICT'S GALLANTRY.
** :— LIFE SENTENCE QUASHED. A convict who was serving a life sentence at Peterhead Gaol has obtained his release by his gallantry in attempting to save a fellow-prisoner from drowning. j The convict, " Tommy " Grey, who was sentenced for the murder of a woman in i Glasgow, was at work on June 16, when i ho saw the other prisoner, Alfred Coates, jump into a disused quarry dip. | Grey immediately dived in, and catchj ing the man's clothes, tried to turn j him on his back. While Grey was shifting his hold, Coates grasped him by the trousers, and a desperate struggle followed. I Grey became exhausted, and was compelled to relinquish his effort to save j Coates. Another convict then camo to I his rescue, and dragged him out of the water. Coates was drowned.
