» OVERRUN " DECLARATION.

LEGISLATION DESIRED.

Wednesday. \ proposed amendment to the Dairy Industry Act, 1908, was submitted to the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union at its meeting yesterday. This provided for the publication to suppliers by dairy factories of the overrun and for an examination of dairj'factory accounts by a Government auditor , should any supplier demand tt. The foi lowing is'the most important clause of the suggested Bill:-" At the close of each financial year the owner of a butter factory or cheese factory shall forwaid to each person from whom he has received I milk or cream for manufacture in that year, a codv of a statement certified to by the auditor of the books of the factory showing: (a) The number of pounds ot butter such dairy factory made as per lb of butter-fat used for butter-making, and also the percentage which the weight of unsalted butter manufactured represents of the total «' make" for the financial year: (b) the number of pounds of cheese which such factory made as per lb of butter-fat used for cneese-making (export weights of cheese to be based on factory weights as corrected by the check weights of the dairy produce grader). Mr K W. Dalrymple (Marton) said that the proposal of the dairy farmers was to discover the factories that manipulated the " overrun." The president said that.the conference should pass a resolution urging the Gov ernment to introduce amending legislation at once. , _ _.„ ~,„. Mr Dalrvmple: The Bill means that the " overrun " must be published under Government inspection. Mr G W. Leadloy (Canterbury) said there' was a good deal of dissatisfaction in the South Island with regard to the proprietary companies. The suppliers did not know'what the overrun was. In the case of the co-operntive companies the information was freely made available. Mr Dalrvmnle moved that the draft B : il be adoDled, and that the Government be urged to introduce the necessary leg'slation. , The resolution was carried after a general discussion.
