ROADING AT DEVONPORT.
COUNCIL AND RATEPAYERS. DENIAL OF LACK OF COURTESY. Matters in connection with the- reading scheme at Devonport were again discussed by tli© Borough Council last evening. The Cheltenham Ratepayers and Residents' Association wrote forwarding a resolution, that, in the meeting's opinion, it was regrettable the Mayor did not carry out the promise made to a large and representative deputation to reconsider the question of reading. While the ratepayers appreciated the public service rendered by the Mayor and councillors, they cons dered that a little more courtesy would involve no loss of dignity. The Mayor, Mr. H. S. W. King, said he was unable to realise that he had been guilty of a breach of courtesy. A motion was passed that no discourtesy was either implied or intended; that the matter was not discussed by the council because no new information had been brought forward by the deputation, and that the council was determined to carry out the expert advice of its engineerA motion that the new roading scheme operations bo suspended until the appointment of the new resident engineer was carried on the Casting vote of the Mayor.
