GENERAL SIR G. BRIDGES. BRILLIANT WAR SERVICE. Australian arid N.Z. CaVe Association. (Reed. 3.30 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. '25. Major-General Sir George Bridges has been appointed Governor of South Australia. During the retreat from Le Gateau, in 1914, General Bridges, then lieutenantcolonel, was sent to collect 250 stragglers who were lying.on the roadside near St. Quentin exhausted, their officers being unable to move. General Bridges went to a toy shop and purchased a little drum, and with & soldier playing a march on a penny whistle spurred on the men to a further effort, and succeeded in marching them 28 miles. General Bridges lost a leg in the war.

General Sir George T. M. Bridges, who is 51 years of age, entered the army in 1892, joining the Royal Artillery. He received his captaincy in 1900, and joined the Dragoon Guards as major in 1908. He received his lieutenant-colonelcy- in 1914, and was brevetted to the rank of colonel in 1916. He served in the South African war with the Light Horse, and was in command of the Western Australian Mounted Infantry from 1899 to 1901, being severely wounded and mentioned in despatches and receiving the Qj»« n ' B medal with six clasps. From 1902 to 1904 he was on service in Somaliland, raising and. commanding the Tribal Horse, and again being severely wounded. He served throughout the European war, being wounded three times and rising to the rank of major-general. He was thrice wounded and seven times mentioned in despatches. Be headed the military mission with the Belgian Army, was military member of Mr. Balfour's mission to the United States in 1917, and headed tue war mission to the Tjnited States the next year. After the war he headed the British mission to the Allied armies of the Orient, returning to England in 1320.
