4». _ A CHINESE STOWAWAY. DETENTION FOR A MONTH. There was a very short sitting of the Police Court on Saturday morning, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. ' ; Chan Fat, a young Chinese, was charged with having stowed away on the steamer Glaucus at Timaru. Through an interpreter, he stated that he had had a qaarrel with the engineer of his own boat, the Physa, and had left the ship, seeking refuge on tho Glaucus. He was found an hour after the ship had left tho port. Ho was ordered to be detained for a month and to be placed on any vessel owned by the British Imperial .Oil Company, owners of the Physa. j The theft of two blankets and a rug, valued at £2 10s, was preferred against I Walter Frederick McCarthy, aged 36. It was stated that he had been out of work for some time, and had been drinking. He went to a house in Hobson Street, and stole the articles, which he sold for 88. He; was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. John Inglis, aged 21, was fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment, for having committed a grossly indecent act in Wellesley Street, time being allowed in which to pay the fine. ■ Thomas Carmody, aged 39, who was ' charged with hayjng no visible means of support, • was discharged on condition that he went to the country. j
