PROGRESS OF WORKS.
WHARF WANTED* AT KARAKA BAY.
The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday afternoon, tho chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, presiding. There were also present Messrs. W. B. Leyland, M. H. Wynyard, J. H. Bradney, E. J. Carr, G. R. Hutchinson, J. B. Teasdale, and J. Henderson.
A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Mr. W. Thome, who was an old member of the board.
In connection with the report of the committee appointed by the Government to investigate the matter of taxation, a letter was received from the Harbours Association suggesting that the board protest against any alteration being made to the exemptions now enjoyed by Harbour Boards in respect to income tax and land tax. The chairman said the Taxation Committee recommended that Harbour Boards be required to pay both income tax and taxes on their lands. It was decided to make the protest as suggested. It was decided, on the recommendation of the Works Committee, that application be made to the City Council to close Beattie Street, and that the board give the land required to widen Quay Street at that point to 120 ft. It was' also decided to suggest to the council that the additional 20ft. on the south side of the area be used for beautifying purposes, with seating accommodation, until required for traffic purposes. A letter was received from Messrs. Jagger and Harvey stating that the Bailway Department had been asked to make certain alterations in the construction of cattle trucks to permit cattle being loaded direct from the trucks to vessels at the wharf. It was resolved to support the request. The engineer reported that good progress had been made with the construction of Prince's Wharf. A total of 727 piles had been driven, and the total decking completed was 80,000 square feet. A start had been made with the columns of Shed No. 23. A petition signed by over 700 persons in the New Lynn' district asking for the erection of a wharf at Portage Road, Karaka Bay, was referred to the Manukau Harbour Committee to report on to the board in committee. _ < An offer from the New Zealand Dairy Company to lease the top floor of Shed 14 on Queen's Wharf for the storing and grading of dried milk powder was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. ~ . It was decided that in futuro meetings of the board in committee be' hula on alternate Mondays and meetings of lue board on Tuesday of the same week.
