RAILWAY CONCESSIONS.
EMPLOYEES' FREE PASSES. The retort courteous was contained in a recent reply by the Northern Wairoa Farmers' Union to a statement made at the railway officers' conference that one of the causes of loss of revenuo to the Railways Department was the free carriage of agricultural lime up to 100 miles limit, and tiie number of trucks damaged or destroyed by fire while engaged in the traffic. In reply to this, the uiion has obtained a return from the general manager of railways as to tho number of free passes and concession ticket* issued to railway servants, exclusive of those engaged on railway business. The return showed that the total number of free passes for holiday leave ? a8 29,086, the estimated value of the journeys covered by the passes being £149,811. In addition, privilege tickets to members of the staff representing a concession of £43,000 were issued, or a total concession to railway servants in 1920-21 of £192,811.
