PACIFIC CABLE SERVICE.
PROPOSED EXTENSIONS.
NEW LINE TO AUCKLAND.
ALTERNATIVE SYDNEY ROUTE The Pacific Cable Board, at a meeting in London last month, decided, subjectto the approval of the Governments concerned, to lay a. new cable betvveen Auckland and Suva and between South - port, on the Queensland coast, and Sydney. ■ At present Sydney cable messages travel from Suva through Norfolk Island and Auckland. A line runs 1 from Norfolk Island to Southport, over "which Queensland messages are carried. The proposed connection between Southport and Sydney will complete the circuit, and thus Sydney traffic will bo offered alternative routes. The information to hand does not make I it clear whether the proposed Suva-Auck- : land line is to be direct or touch at Norfolk Island, but it is remarked that tho line will obviate much of the difficulty arising from the breakdowns which are of frequent! occurrence in tho shallow waters near Norfolk Island. I Tho board is also making some experiments with regard to wireless receiving apparatus at Fanning Island, and also with regard to " continuous loading," before deciding upon tho duplication of j the cable at the " bottle neck " scction between Bamfield, near Vancouver, and Fanning Island.
