GOODS FROM GERMANY.
AUSTRALIAN PRECAUTIONS.
ASSESSMENT OF VALUES.
[FROM OUR, OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
SYDNEY. Aug. 16,
Although the embargo against German goods was lifted only on August 1 there have already been several shipments unloaded into the country. These consignments have been too small, however, to indicate what will be the ultimate- result of renewing trade with our former enemy. It is expected that several mortis must elapse before the effect of tho removal of the embargo is fully disclosed.
For obvious reasons the precise administrative methods to be adopted by tho Customs Department and the Tariff Board to protect Australian and British industries have not been published, but the ' general procedure has been announced bv the Tariff Board.
Documents in respect of German goods will be examined by customs officers, and entries must bo passed in the ordinary way. Delivery cannot be taken until the duty has been paid, this applying equally to the special duties for which provision has been roado. in the anti-dumping law. The authorities will be assisted to some extent by the requirements of the German Government that exporters must declaro the value of goods in the currem.y of the country to which thev are consigned. The export duties imposed in Germany should influence the volume of goods sent to Australia, The Industries Preservation Act will probably be amended shortly to give the Tariff Board wider powers of initiating inquiries and action to preserve Australian industries. n( **f the Customs Act duties can be imposed _; in the event of an under-assessfiwnt,/»? any time within twelve monthfl-w importation, even though, the been sold.
