MOVING A POPULATION.

BARREN SPANISH DISTRICT. VISIT BY KING ALFONSO. As a result of King Alfonso's visit to Las Hurdea, that rugged and inhospitable wilderness in West Central Spain, it is proposed to abandon the district altogether, and provide its inhabitants with the means of living in better conditions and among kindlier surroundings. It •was originally intended to provide them with cattle and agricultural implements to enable them to improve their situation ; but the country is so inhospitable that it has been decided to transfer elsewhere the six or seven thousand wretches who have telung to it. Their existence could only be compared with that of people in the slums of most big cities. The King and his party spent five days in Las Eurdes and the surrounding country. The first part of the journey was accomplished by motor-car, but the Royal party had to rely mainly on horses, which were later replaced by sure-footed mules : and these in turn had to be abandoned when it came to traversing the narrow mountain paths monk frequented by wolves than by human beings, or the steep, dangerous cute. The inhabitants ef tha tiny hamlets turned out en masse, and gave the King an enthusiastic welcome. They are as agile as goats and, in spits of their physical inferiority, they climbed over crags which would have baffled an alpine expert ; and, leaping from rock U boulder, vied with each other in being the first to greet the King. They sang hymns to welcome their Royal visitor and presented him with pathetic offerings of cherry-boughs laden with ripe frudt, clustering around while a spokesman recited their woes and hopes. In the richer village# triumphal arches had been quickly set u:p, and there was a lavish display of bunting. Here and there the party came across a fine, clean jjchool, or a wide l'oad which constituted a pleasant relief to horsemen and horses alike, or a church full of historical interest: but for the most, part the houses were miserable hovels, totally unfit for human habitation. Of- the churches, the most remarkable is ono called, "The Temple of the Pities," a beautiful building that dates from the year 1685, and owes its name to the popular belief that "it is a pity that it should be situated in such poor surroundings." In ( a few villages a large proportion of the inhabitants were found to be suffering from fever, and gifts of quinine were eagerly and gratefully accepted. Several famous Madrid specialists accompanied Kins Alfonso, and one of them was begeed to visit the husband of a poor woman who, after thanking the eminent man for his services, endeavoured to repay him by presenting him with one penny.
