LATE LORD NORTHCLIFFE.
♦ IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL. WIDESPREAD MOURNING. (Received 7.40 p.m.) United Service. LONDON, Aug. 17. A great concourse gathered mside and outside Westminster Abbey to pay a last tribute of respect to the late Lord Northcliffe. The long route to Miirylebone cemetery was lined by people of all classes, standing bareheaded, while the coffin, followed by a seemingly endless stream of cars, passed. A huge car, laden with floral tributes from the highest to the humblest in the land, demonstrated the wide esteem in which he was held. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.40 p-m.) LONDON, Aug. 17. Lord Northcliffe was accorded an impressive funeral service at Westminster Abbey. General F. G. Cotter represented the Prince of Wales, and Sir Edward Grigg the Prime Minister. The American and French Ambassadors and several of the diplomatic corps were present, as well as Sir Joseph Cook and Sir James Allen. MR. MASSEY'S TRIBUTE. " A LOVER OF EMPIRE." In response to a communication from the London Daily Mail for a message regarding the death of Lord Northcliffe, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. Massey, cabled as follows:— " The news of Lord Northcliife's death was received in New Zealand with profound regret. Since hi« visit to the Dominion last year it has been recognised that there was no more ardent lover of the Empire and every portion of it than Lord Northcliffe. He worked unceasingly to promote the spirit of unity upon which its stability and tho welfare' of its citizens is based, and his loss will be deplored accordingly in every country under the British flag."
