PILLION RIDING.
Sir,—" G.H." says riding is not dangerous. ■: This week I received a'Homo mail, and opening an athletic -paper, I read of two deaths to two differenfi pilhoa riders in., two .placdj^. ;jtitf the editor," himself a- motor-cyclist,.,:*»ays in a leader thai, the practice >i»Mnosfc dangerous, not only to the rideis, Iwit; to . others, a&d. thai it caused ;lnmdieds of .accidents ' each year. He advised riders to stop it before tho authorities stepped m and foroad them to. do io. :. ■;; W< Sir,—ln reply to "GiH." kindly permifi me to point out that at least two serious accidents were more or less, attributed ta tho above " rather popular" practice. One about two years ago in the lower part of Khyber Pass where a motor lorry was encountered, and another more recently in Ponsohby Road. To witness the grip " Cumberland style " : a young girl usually ', takes of the motorist, indicates in itself the- insecurity o£ the second rider. It behoves all those . in the general well-being . of the community, to also form •'themselves, into a deputation to wait on the Otahuhu Borough Council, and so counteract any side-stepping that may eventuate to overthrow at least one sensible by-law this council is capable of drawing up. [ . Aisrtnm Ceiranrcs. Sir,—ln reply to " Junius," the members of., the deputation that waited on the Otahuhu Borough Council, are not . road-hogs, neither are the motor-cyclists they represent. In defence of the councillors, it, may be btated that they adopted this by-iaw solely at the instigation of-the load police sergeant. Thi3 they did under tho impression that other . local bodies were being, asked by the police to udopt a similar by-law. This not proving to be the case, and the motor- [ cyclists at their first opportunity, placing their views before the council,! the councillors, like fair, and bread-minded men, considered the fresh facts placed before them.. Men having the courage to*amend their decisions based on one-sided eyii dence, are to be praised, not held tip to ridicule. A. J. Geanville.
