THE UNMARRIED MOTHER.
Sir, —A fihort time ago, you published a Press Association article from Christeliurclregarding the unmarried mother. The North Canterbury Hospital Board had decided to urge the Minister for Health to allow unmarried women to be admitted to St, Helens Maternity Hospital. The suggestion was that single women admitted to such institutions could bo described as married, so that patients would bo unaware that they had not a legal standing Dr. P. 0. Fenwick, who moved in the matter, added that his suggestion might not be the ideal one, but- that it was the only humane thing to do. Possibly in Christchurch there is no rccognised refuge for the unmarried jnother. I desire to point out that in Auckland At least there is an institution, viz., St. Mary's Homes. Otahuhu, that admits tho unmarried expectant mother, irrespective of creed or denomination, with the one object of helping those who have erred to return to the right path. The mother, at this institution, is .given a course of moral and industrial training for six months, during which time she cares personally for her infant during the most critical period of its life.
