TWO ATTACKS DEFEATED.
WOODEN SHIPS CONTRACT. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Aug, 17. In the House of Representatives, Mr. Moloney, submitting his motion condemning the' Government on the ground that it submitted to a secret inquiry' into the conditions of the Kidman-Mayoh shipbuilding contract, contended that by allowing the matter to be decided by arbitration the Federal Government lost £50,000. The debate was unfinished.
When the House resumed discussion on Committee of Supply, Dr. Earle I'age, Leader of the Country Party, moved an amendment that Supply be reduced by J3l as an instruction to the Government to reduce the price of sugar forthwith to 5d per lb. The amendment was negatived by 32 votes; to 29.
Mr. Moloney then moved a reduction Ol 10s, with a view to having his motion regarding the shipbuilding contract moved earlier further discussed. The motion was negatived by 55 votes to 24. Dr. Page and a number of the members of the Country Party voted with the Labour Party.
