RAILWAY CONFERENCE.
EARLY AGREEMENT EXPECTED
MEDIATION BY PRESIDENT. By Teleur&DU—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 6,30 p.m.) A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. Aug. 16. The Washington correspondent of the New York. Times states that the President may defer his address to Congress on the strike situation. He has been strongly advised to delay its presentation until, after the meeting of the railway executives and brotherhoods in New York to-morrow, regarding which there is a much more hopeful feeling.
Mr. Jewell, head of the railway employees' department of tho American Federation of Labour, expressed confidence that a settlement would bo reached in a few days.
Mr. Harding's emissaries are busy trying to induco the railway executives and brotherhoods to reach an agreement.
A message from Chicago announces that a Society of America Commission has been incorporated under tho Illinois laws. It is composed of middle classes and its aim will be to end strikes and other forms of industrial strife.
MINING SETTLEMENT. MORE OWNERS ACCEPT. A. and N.Z. WASHINGTON. Auff. 16. The Secretary for Labour, Mr. J- J. Davis, has announced that scores of mineowners who declined to attend the Cleveland conference now state that they are willing to accept the terras of settlement arrived at yesterday, under which a temporary wages scale was arrived at. As the south-western district owners' have agreed to meet the union leaders on Tuesday next, it is expected that the settlement will be country-wide within tho week.
COAL FROM BRITAIN.
30,000 TONS FOR NEW YORK.

Fire vessels carrying 30,000 tons oj British coal have arrived at New York. Tho coal has been assigned to New York City for public utilities- and railways.Its price ranges from 9i dollars to 11 dollars a ton delivered. Several hundred thousand tons are now on tho high seas.
