MORAL COURAGE NEEDED.
THE GAMBLING EVIL.
DEAN HARPER'S OPINION. [B'i TELEtiaAPH.—-OWN COKEESPONDiINT.]
CHKTSTCHTJRC'H. Monaay.
Preaching at the cathedral last night on " Public Opinion and Gambling," Dean. Harper said there were too many people in the Dominion given to betting. Gambling had an evil effect on sport- Me knew somsthing about racing, though he had never betted sixpence in his life, and he knew there was a good deal of what •was known as " pulling" and unrighteous riding. When he was a student he took a keen interest in rowing, juid he remembered thit when the Harvard crew went to England to row Oxford the Americans insisted that someone should be appointed to look after their food, a thought which never entered the minds of Oxford. This shewed how the betting evil, which was then beginning to make itself feit, degraded sport. What was needed was mcru moral courage.
