QUINNAT SALMON.

The success of the introduction into New Zealand of quinnat salmon is proved in a statement issued by the Marine Department. During the past season 1.579.000 quinnat salmon ova were collected from the various rivers in the Dominion, but mostly froni the Hakataramea. The ova were distributed as follows :—Upper Clutha. River, 180,000; tributaries of Wakatipu, 200,000; Wairau River (Marlborough), 64b',1; , .0; Hokitika River, 400,000; and 100.000 were sold to the Tasmanian Government. There had been a small loss during incubation of about 15,000. Borne 36,000 fry will he retained at Hakataramea to be reared to yearlings. It is hoped that during the ensuing summer quinnat salmon will be available to the public as a food commodity. The quinnat salmon attains a weight up to 6Qlb.
