CONCERN IN CANTERBURY. NEED FOR THINNING HERDS. In the districts, north of the Hurunui River in Canterbury the large increases in leer herds have resulted in the animals doing damage to sheep feed and native bush. The damage is so great that it is felt it will be necessary to reduce the herds. This is more so realised, as the animalß have commenced to migrate south. The matter was again before the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society at its last meeting. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister for Internal Affairs, wrote sttatine that he would be pleased to meet in Christchurch representatives of the various acclimatisation societies, together with a representative of the Forestry Department, to go into the question of" the destruction caused by deer in the forests of the Dominion, It was intended to rake up the question as soon as it could he attended to. Meanwhile the Government wa s consulting with the State Forest Service on the subject. Mr. E. N. 'Caffin stated that the question was one for North Canterbury, Marlborough, and Nelson. Government assistance would be necessary to deal with the question of reducing the herds. The council decided to take no action nntii the conference referred to had been held in Christ church. j j
