RUGBY FOOTBALL CHARGES.
Sir,—The Rugby game is regaining its popularity in Auckland, duo to the efforts of the Auckland Rugby Union and the players. .In regard to the North v. 'South Island match, the New Zealand Rugby Union is charging 2b 2d admission, whereas if the charge was Is there would be twice the crowd and as much gate money. Is the New Zealand Rugby Union promoting the amateur game or a professional money-making scheme? Half the population of Auckland win not pay 2a 2d to see a game of Rugby when they can see the League for Is. It was stated that the charge of 2e 6d to sea the /Springboks ' was due to the heavy expense in bringing the team to New Zealand and in travelling. Where is the heavy expense incurred in the North v. South Island game, and the charge is almost the same amount? Is it Hair-for .the A.RJCT. to promote the sporting game, and then the N.ZiR.U. ruin it forthe sake of £.&d. Believe me, if this is the way the amateur game is promoted, in a few years there will be only one game—League. Remember, we play the game because it is amateur, not for what we can make out of it. If we were after the £.s,d. we would play Leajue. Why don't the N.Z.R.U. show the sporting spirit, and leave the £.s.d. out of it? Then we might expect the crowd to come back. T. R. Ismnr.
