Many people are misled to think they are having their sight tested by the operator selecting the glass that appears to give the best result on a testing-card at the end of a well' lighted room. This is not sight-testing, but it was in tho old days—the days in which the dentist attended to every want of the teeth with the forceps,, for science has advanced in the optical world the same as it has in the dental, and all other things. The modern optician is a man carefully trained in the use of the visoptometre; unfortunately for the many students of the science of optics few can learn to skilfully handle this instrument. It is not something that can be taught to all men; it becomes natural to the few. A child of three months of \ age can be tested, and likewise the elder children and adults, without the operator relying in any way upon the answers of the patient. Mr. Russell, of Russell, Ltd., Opticians, New Zealand Insurance Company's Buildings, Queen Street, Auckland, is an expert with the visoptometre, having been a tutor of the subject for 16 years combined with altogether 26 years of optical experience, and the highest qualifications an. optician can possess. The rapid growth, of Rusßell, Ltd., who have branches in five centres,' is a proof that more than ordinary skill is exercised in the prescribing and manufacturing of glasses.
