TRADE WITH JAVA.

DOMINION'S OPPORTUNITIES, The opportunities for New Zealand exportery to build np & great trade with (Java was emphasbad by the 'fice-CoDSul i for the Netbsrlandn, Mr. M. Copeland, lat the meeting oi tb.9 council of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr, Copeland - said that many of the products of New Zealand could be used in Java. He explained the extent of Australia's trade with Java in batter, meat, and jam, not less than Iao.OOO cases of the last-mentioned commodity being required annually. Tb9 Australian Government subsidised the manufacturers to the ; extent of at least £12 10s per ton, on condition that the retail price of sugar did not go higher than 4id per lb. _ In , New Zealand the price could ha less with'out a subsidy. Then there was b.OG-jy> for which New Zealand stood absolutely alone as regards quality. No New Zealand honey was sold in Java. Enormous quantities of soap weie required, as even the native used it. Australia had the entire trade in soap. Thcra was also scope for the export of apples from New Zealand. The demand for granite and marble was very great. As for the important trade in meat and butter, Australia obtained it all. Java did not get a pound of New Zealand's high-quality batter. The difficulty ?a regards the shipping question ccald now bs overcome. It seemed to him that if the Cha;nbsrs of Commorce sent a man to Java to look after the interests of New EeaJand the results would be satisfactory. Tho Netherlands Consul-General for Australia would probably arrive in Auckland next Tuesday. New Zealand manufacturer;; should arrange exhibitions of products in Java. In reply to questions, Mr. Copeland t assured the council that there would be no trouble in regard to shipping in the future if back-leading from Java.
