THE TRADE OF THE PORT. [BY TEL2anAPH.—OWN CORBESPONnENT. ] TAURANGA, Saturday. The principal exports shipped from Tauranga during May comprised 2208 boxes of butter, 300 cases of eggs, 520 cases of fruit, 498 bales of fibre and tow, 300 sheep and pig?, 1920 sacks of maize, and 84.000 ft. of timber. Several local residents are devoting attention to tobacco growing. The crops are now being gathered and dried preparatory to undergoing the curing process. In many instances the leave 3 have attained a length of threo feet. Maize picking operations are now in full swing all over the district. Generally speaking the yield is a good oue. Word has been received from the Marine Department that the GovernorOeneral has approved of the plans for the ferro concrete bridge proposed to be erected across the Waikareao Estuary, and has authorised the Otumoetai special rating district to carry out the work in accordance with tho plans. Work in connection with the stone filling and erection of the new bridge at Hairini, the largest bridge in Tauranga County, is being carried out by the Public Works Department. Up to March 31 last the expenditure on the work had totalled £5268. The Government has granted a subsidy on the cost, and the remainder of the money has to be provided by the county and borough councils.
The Borough Council has agreed to bear half the cost of the deficiency of £54 in connection with the eraction of the memorial gates at the entrance to the Domain. The other half of the deficiency is being met by the County Council.
