RELIGION OF IMMIGRANTS.
CATHOLICS TAKING ACTION. MOVEMENT IN AUSTRALIA. [feom oxna own correspondent.] SYDNEY, June 7. A movement is on foot in New South Wales to ensure that immigrants coming to Australia, shall include a proper proportion of Roman Catholics. A circular has been sent out to influential Supporters of the Roman Catholic Church asking for subscriptions to a fund for this purpose. -," Among other things ..fcfie circular states: "Having in view the, different .schemes of immigration for New South Wales— namely, the Dreadnought scheme, the - Barnardo Homes scheme, the Salvation Army scheme, and the Government scheme—it is realised 'that if the Catholics do not bestir themselves, their proportion of the population will increasingly and seriously diminish. A committee has been formed, representing a large body of Catholics, and a scheme has been devised, of which the following is an outline :— " Selection in th« British Islea, and possibly in America of suitable immigrants —boys up to &0 years of age, and young women to 30 years—the former for rural occupations, and the latter for domestic service. The selection will be carried out by the existirig Catholic organisations in different centres overseas, and part of their general activity .will be the arranging of positions for such immigrants to which they will be sent upon arrival. The matter is one of national . importance as well as in the Catholic interest."
