COMBATING THE PLAGUE
A PROMISING SERUM.
WIDER USE URGED. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. May 13. Tho Sydney Daily Telegraph draws attention to the fact that a nem anti-plaguo serum, discovered by a young Sydney doctor, is being used in Sydney, and is apparently proving a powerful weapon against the scourge, yet the Federal authorities and the Queensland Government, acting under Federal advice, refuse to use it.
The newspaper points out that of 31 cases in Sydney, seven died. Two of these were not treated with the new serum, and only two of tho others died after being properly treated. One of these was a man of 85 years. In Queensland, where tho new serum is not employed, 64 out of 115 plague patients died. Though tho discoverer does not claim that the serum ia a cure for plague, the number of patients treated- so far being too few to justify a definite conclusion, the newspaper contends that larger experience might prove that a cure for the dreaded disease has at Inst been discovered.
