SHARP EARTHQUAKE.

SHOCKS IN BAY OF PLENTY. WHITE ISLAND VERY ACTIVE. [BV telegraph.—PßESS ASSOCIATION.} WHAKATANE. Saturday. A sharp earthquake was felt throughout this district at 7.40 p.m. yesterday. It was followed by intermittent shakes through the night. Residents on the R-angataiki apparently felt shakes more severe than the pcopic of Whakatane.

Each shake was preceded by a heavy rumble. The tirst sounded like a landslide on a. rocky hillside. Tho direction of the earthquake seemed to be from north-east in a line with White Island, which was very active this morning. Whale Island is also showing a little activity.
