GOVERNMENT HOUSING.
OPERATIONS REVIEWED. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT,] FEILDING. Wednesday. The work of tlie Government in connection with housing 1 was mentioned by the Prime Minister in his speech to-night. He said the results actually attained during the last ;two or three years had been much greater than many people imagined. The State Advances Department during the years 1920 and 1921 and the first quarter of 1922 had made advances to the amount of £2.780,715 in respect of 5301 houses. The money had been used to build houses, complete purchases of properties, release mortgages on house properties, and erect workers' dwellings. The Labour Department through the housing branch had spent £541,788, including the purchase of land, and had erected or purchased 439 houses. The Railway Department in slightly under two years had built 200 houses at a cost of £170,000. These figures showed a total expenditure of £3,492,503 on 5940 houses. The amount, added Mr. Massey, did not include the advances made to returned soldiers for tho purchase or erection of houses. A sum of £7,747,318 had been advanced to 10,708 soldiers.
