PORTLAND ROAD SCHEME.
GREATLY IMPROVED ACCESS.
An important road work that should greatly stimulate building in the Remuera district is now being carried out by tho City Council. The work includes the grading, forming, kerbing, and channelling of Portland Road from Westbourne Crescent to Aldred Road, a total length of about 2000 ft. Portland Road runs from the main Remuera Road to Shore Road, which skirts tho foreshore of Hobson Bay and leads via Brighton Road and St. Stephen's Avenue to Manukau Road, Parnell. The section of the road now being improved comprises rather steep grades, which aro being considerably reduced and made much easier for traffic. Apart from tho road work, a considerable amount of culverting has been done, which will have the effect of draining the lower portion of the road that traverses a flat valley between low sloping hills leading out to Hobson Bay. Abutting the road, grass fields in which cows and horses browso run back up tho slopes on each side. Little budding has yet been done along tho lower portion of the road, but here and there trim-looking modern bungalows aro to be seen, giving evidence that as soon as access to the locality has been made equal to that of other desirable districts it will very quickly be more thickly populated.- The present scheme does not include the improvement of the lower portion of the road, which has been metalled, but hitherto ha« carried little traffic. The impro% f omcnt of the flat, however, should not be a difficult or expensive undertaking. When completed, in addition to giving good access to tho lower portion of the district, the scheme will provido an excellent through route from Remuera to tho city via Hobson Bay and Parnell. The present work has been in hand for about four months, and should bo completed within tho next few weeks.
