EXTENT OF ECONOMIES.
MR. MASSEY'S ESTIMATE.
TOTAL SUM OF £5,646,835. [BY TSLI2GEJLPH. —OWN COROESrONDENT.] FEILDING, Wednesday. The following statement of economies made in the Public Service was made by the Prime Minister at Feilding to-night:— Total amount saved as the result of the first, cut in the cost-of-living increase for January, February, and March, 1922, £177,234, equivalent to an annual saving of £752,936. Savings resulting from economies effected during tho year 192122, including reduction of staff, £912,554. Butter and flour subsidies discontinued, £1,000,000. Total estimated annual saving from other economies now operating, £889,112. Additional revenue accruing from economics effected or adjustments of method of collection, £72,099. Savings in interest and sinking fund, £766,900. Estimated annual saving by proposed second cut in salaries, etc., £646,000. Estimated annual saving by proposed third cut in salaries, etc., £430,000. Total, £5,646.835. Increased charges had, however, to be met on account of interest and sinking fund, £610,685, scale increases to classified salaries, £226,445; total. £837,128.
