The Government, by a clever rase, prevented interruption. oi the public services, while satisfying the Labour extremists by offering a holiday, but adding that the men would not bo paid, and the clay off would be part of their annual holiday. The result was that there were practically no applications for leave of absence from duty. The school children were . also offered a holiday if they brought a letter from their parents. The result was that scarcely any parents troubled to write QUIET DAY ELSEWHERE. GENERAL HOLIDAY IN ROME. May Day passed quietly in Rome, according to a telegram. The shops were closed, no vehicles plied, and no newspapers were published. In Paris May Day passed quietly. The customary resolutions were passed, and the debate was adjourned with Sabbatical calm. Except for the cabmen, who die not ply, business of every kind went or absolutely as usual. A giant aeroplane Goliath cruised over the city watching the Socialist meetings. MINOR CLASHES IN JAPAN "WELCOME" TO THE PRINCE (Received 5.5 p.m.) Renter. TOKIO. May 1 There were May Day processions in al the large Japanese cities. Minor clashe: occurred with the police who lined th. routes. At Osaka the workers were for bidden to hold a Labour parade, but so cured their objective by holding it in th. guise of a welcome to the Prince o Wales. ___________——-
