DROP IN LIVING COSTS.

WELLINGTON. Monday. | Thorc is a prospect of the price of j being reduced as the result of tho Arbitra- ' tion Court havinj; filed an order reducing tho wages of wo -Iters in coalmines. Tho order of tho Court, has been mado in pursuance of a clausti in tho Coalmines Award which contains provision for rates of wages being reviewed every six months, j and adjusted in accordance with tho movement in the cost-of-living figures for the food groups only. The offect of the order, which operates from to-day, is to reduce the wagos of minimum time rate rndn from 16s a day to 14s 3d. Corresponding decreases aro also made in tho rates of piece-workers.
That the public may look forward to a reduction in the price of coal is borne out by tho following resolution passed at a meeting of the Coalmine Owners' Association, held on March 24:—"That it be a recommendation of tho "executive to all members that as soon as mine employeos' wages arc reduced by general order of the Arbitration Court on May 1 the selling price of coa'i at tho mine shall be at onco reduced by a proportionate amount, and that all such reductions bo fully advertised in tho press."
