4>. NEW SCHOOL BUILDINGS. ACQUISITION OF SITES.

The Auckland Education Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. E. C. Banks, presiding. There were also present: Mrs. N. E. Ferner. and Messrs. J. S. Bond. A. Burns, H. S. W. Kin;;, J. D. McKenzie, R. C. Smith, G. W. Murray, ar.d W. J Campbell. The"teacher of the NgaUki school applied for the erection of a. teacher's residence, or, alternatively, for permission to sleep in the school building. It was decided to inform the people of the district through the School Committee that unless accommodation was found for the teacher the school would have to be closed. The department, in reply to a request for the erection of a school building at Hillcrest, Hamilton East, authorised the board to arrange for '.be issue of debentures for £1300, to be taken up by the residents, and authorised a want of £765 toward the cost of the building. The architect was empowered to *ct accordinglv. Approval of the porcnase of a site of 12J acres for a technical high school at \ Te Kuiti was receii ed from the depart-; nient. and steps were ordered to be takm for the acquisition of the property. Ine total cost is £1575. cf which £700 has been raised bv the Te Kuiti people. The department authorised the board to proceed with the acquisition of additional land for the WbabUne school, provided that the residents took up a debenture for £100. As this had been done, the board's solicitors were instructed to prepare the transfer of the land. It was decided to urge the department to reconsider the board's application for a grant toward the erection of a school building at Flaxmill, Dargaville, as the need is urgent. Notification was received from the department of a grant of £271 made toward the cost of erecting a school building at Msioro, Otaua. The architect was instructed to act when the site was vested in the board. The question of the proposed erection of a school building on Mamie's Reserve, Newton, was referred to a deputation which will wait upon the Minister for Education. A request for the establishment of a school at Mangatara was renewed. It wae stated that the residents had offered to supply materials, do the necessary carting and perform the work. Mr. Smith said that the necessity for the building could be judged from "the fact that there were ohildren in the district eleven years of age who had never been to school. It was decided to submit the request to the Education Department and urge an early reply to a former application for a grant. A* memorandum was received from the Education Department asking the board to distribute to training college students and to pupil teachers and probationers a leaflet containing health hints for entrants to the teaching profession. Consideration was deferred to enable members to aquaint themselves with the proposals. A request from the Otorohanga School Committee for the establishment of a model country school was declined on the recommendation of the senior and advisory inspectors.
