THE RANGIRIRI ROAD.
DEVIATION TO THE FLAT.
MR. MASSEY'S PROMISE.
Speaking of his recent tour of the East Coast, at the Commercial Travellers' Crab yesterday, Mr. Massey said he had travelled over miles of muddy roads, but be had got through all right. He had no doubt that many commercial travellers had experienced these roads frequently and knew what they were like. " We are going to improve these roads right away," said Mr. Massey. (Laughter and applause.} " Roading in this country has to be taken up energetically. I saw a referenca to the Rangiriri hills the other day," be observed, "and I want to tell you that we are going to improve the Great South Road. A commission was appointed to go into this matter of improving the road, having special regard to that portion which at present goes over the Rangiriri hills, ana it has done its work well. It will not be nec&sury in future to go over the hills, as we ar« going to divert the road to the flat on the cast side of the hills."
Mr. Massey said he would not eay tha work would be carried out in a few weeks, but it would be done. It was qudte likely, if there were many unemployed, that some would be found work here in due course. So far as the East Coast was concerned there was no country in New Zealand worth reading mora than this-.,
