NARROW NECK CARNIVAL.

SUCCESSFUL BEACH FAIR.

The fair and carnival held at Narrow Neck beach on Saturday, and prompt.'d by the North Devonport and Vaux'i.ill Ratepayers' Association in aid of the fund being raised for transforming the reserve 20 acres in extent, lying between the beach and the Takapuna Jockey Club's racecourse, into a public park, was not favoured with perfect weather. A choppy sea, duo to the prevailing northerly wind, necessitated an abandonment of the programme of aquatic sports, except that the rowing events, organised by the North Shore Rowing Club, for trophies presonted by tho carnival committee and Mr. H. Crubb, were contested in the quieter waters of tho Waitemata Harbour, where also the speed motor-boat, Miss Masport. ran trips for tho benefit of the fund A heavy shower of rain in the afternoon was an additional disadvantage, but. nevertheless, both in the day time and evening a large attendance was maintained and a surplus of about £150 is expected to accrue from the gathering.

The opening ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Devonport, Mr. H. 8W. King, who paid a testimony to the association's efforts in seeking to popularise the district.

The fair, which was pitched on the portion of the reserve adjacent to the beach, provided a wide range of attractions, no less than 24 side-shows operating, trß proprietors of Joyland being mainly responsible for that form of entertainment. Musical selections were rendered by the Devonport Boys' Brass Band under the conductorship of Mr. A. W. Tattoo. The refreshment and tea tent was largely patronised, the voluntary helpers including Mesdames McClcJland, Wing, Gladding, Hill, Palmer. Williamson, .Miller, and Dellow, and Miss Wing. In tho evening the show arena was brilliantly illuminated with electric lights and jazz dancing to the strains of Mr. Walter Smith's orchestra was gaily indulged in, an amateur pierrot troupe, under tho title of "The Hyghwaiuns," also giving a series of entertainments. Mr. R. Hunt ably carried out the secretarial arrangements, an energetic committee rendering valuable assistance, Folflowing are the results of the various events contested :—
