SWIMMERS CENSURED.

CANTERBURY SURF TEAM.

FAILURE TO COMPETE. [by telegraph.—press association.] CHRISTCHUBCH. Saturday.

The action of three members of the New Brighton Surf Club in refusing to compete a s members of the Canterbury representative team for the Nelson Shield life-saving contest at the New Zealand championship meetine in Wellington last month, provoked a lively discussion at a meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association. The members concerned had been selected for the Canterbury team, but did not represent their club at the contest, and New Brighton won the sbjeld. The three members, in correspondence, gave reasons for their action. During tho cour e of a long discussion it was emphasised that a principle was at stake, in that in sport it was recognised that when a person wa s selected to represent a province he must do sn unless he had a sound r?ason for refusing. A resolution was passed, "That the association dues not, onsider the explanations offered by the thr t :e members satisfactory to the association from a surfing standpoint, and that they be censured for their action."

I An amendment, "That the members be suspended from the date of their offence,'' was defeated, also a second amendment, "That the association views with displeasure the action of the thief members, and expresses regret for late nsss in the selection of the Canterbury team."

Before the motion was put the X-«w Brighton Club delegates withdrew from the meeting.
