PRICES STILL LOWER.

'STANDARD IN JANUARY. [bx telegeaph—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. The cost of living as measured by the retail prices of foods showed another fall in January, and it stands now at 47 per cent, above the cost in July, 1914.

The peak of high prioes was reached in December, 1920, when retail prices were over 78 per cent, in excess of the pre-war rates. During 1921, prices fell to 50 per cent, above the level of July, 1914, the index number for December being equal to that for December, 1918. The January index number is higher than that for November, 1918, which showed an increase of 44 per cent.

Disclosing the January fipsres, the Government Statistican states that in the groceries group, a rise of 37 points has been recorded, due mainly to increases in the prices of tinned fruits and fruits did not have to pay the extra cost of the tinned stuff.

The index number for the dairy products group fell 181 points owing to considerable decreases all round in the prices of butter and bacon. tobacco.
