SUBSIDIES TO SCHOOLS.
DEFERRED APPLICATIONS.
PAYMENT TO BE MADE.'
An item of interest to Auck'and School Committees was contained in a memorandum received yesterday by the Education Board from the department, stating tflat deferred applications for subsidies on voluntary contributions will new be dealt with, A hint that strict supervision is to be made with regard to futuro requests for subsidies was contained in a further memorandum to the effect that when a substantial sum is to be spent on ground improvements, the approval of the board's architect must be obtained and the department advised accordingly. In all cases, the nature of the ground improvements is to be clearly stated, a mere entry, "ground improvements," being insufficient. Subsidies for school tennis courts will in future be paid at the rate of £1 for every £2 contributed, in coses where it is convincingly shown that the court? are. primarily for the use of the school p'Jpfls, the subsidy to be paid upon initial expenditure only, and not for maintenance or replacement of either tho courts or the tennis equipment
