IMPORTED GLASS BOTTLES.
QUESTION OF A DUTY. CORDIAL MAKERS' VIEWS. The subject of the importation of glass bottles was discussed yesterday by tho committee of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association. Mr. F. M Hills presided. j A letter was received from the Auckland I Aerated Water Manufacturers' Association drawing attention to tho action of an Australian firm of bottle manufacturers, contemplating establishing a branch in New Zealand, asking for the imposition of a duty on all imported bottles, including those of English manufacture. A letter had been forwarded to the Prime Minister asking that before the Government committed itself to imposo a duty on the English article those most concerned should be consulted. It was maintained that the freight and charges on English .bottles constituted .sufficient protection. The support of the association was asked in this action. i Mr. Hills remarked that the aerated water manufacturers were themselves protected by a tariff, yet they were asking that bottles should be admitted free, that, in fact, no glass bottles should be manufactured in New Zealand. He doubted whether the association could go so far as to back that up. After discussion, it was decided to write supporting the view that those concerned should givq their views, but pointing out that as the materials for the making of bottles were available in New Zealand it might be a proper case for a protective duty.
