WAITEMATA ROADS.

Sir,—Recently comment was made by Mr. W. J. Napier ro the bad state of the main Devonport-Waiwera road between Oknra and Sih'erdale; and old residents can endorse tho protest. During the last 12 months the neglect of the eastern roads of Waitemata shows clearly the necessity of tho division of the county and the constitution of the proposed new County of Akarana. Complaints are heard a'mest daily from motorists using the Main East Coast Road and the Waitemata Comity Council has declared its inability to carry out the suggestions made bv the Government Commission which sat 12 months ago, so that residents feel assured that the recommendation of the commission that a new county should be constituted must shortly take effect. The Akarana League of Ratepayers will hold its third annual meeting at Kaukapakapa early next ..nonth, when formal demand for the finding of the commission to take effect will be advanced another stage and be forwarded to Cabinet.

W. E. Jorrxs, Hon- Sec. Akarana League of Ratepayers.

Sir,—May I thank Mr. W. J. Napier for taking up the question of our vile roads. That such a state oi things should exist within the suburban area is a disgrace to the City of Auckland and the Waitemata Council. Only last winter three women in Silverdale verv nearly paid with their lives for living here, my wife among the number. For four taxi hires to and from Devonport, a distance of 37 miles, it cost me £35. It took Dr. Hagen, of Devonport, 65 hours to get home in a taxi from here. The whole distance which requires me.talliug is about five miles. If this were done we would then have a daiiy service to Auckland, both passenger and mails. I notice, also, that Mr. Massey has been doing some rough riding down Gisborne way. He certainly need not go so far for exercise. If he will only hire a car from Devonport and come out and see the state the main defence road is in I personally will gladily defray the cost, and see that he has a'hearty welcome from the Silverdale Progressive League, W. F. Green, Hon. Sec. Silverdale Progressive League. . i
