WORKERS IN TEAROOMS.
FRUITLESS CONCILIATION.
QUESTIONS FOR THE COURT.
When the dispute between the proprietors of the Auckland restaurants and tearooms and the Auckland Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Union was before a conciliation council last month, an application was made to join the country restaurant and tearoom employers in the northern industrial district as partes to the dispute. This application was granted, and about 120 names wero added. The employers proposed a starting wage for waitresses of iOs a week, rising to 25s a week after three years' service. This is a considerable reduction on the present rates. The adjourned proceedings took place yesterday, the commissioner, Mr. T. Harle Giles, presiding. No agreement was reached on the questions of wages, hours of work, and holidays, and these points were referred to the Arbitration Court. A partial agreement was arrived at on a number of machinerv clauses. The commissioner was thanked by both parties for his efforts to arrive at a settlement.
