VICTORY WINS DUNNING CUP.
Tho North Shore Yacht Club held a general handicap on Saturday afternoon for the larger yachts and races for open boats. The first prize for the big race was a cup presented by the late Mr. James Dunning, a former officer of the club. Of the smaller classes the most important event was the raco for the 14ft one-design boats, which for this occasion was restricted to youths under 21 years. A good sailing breeze from the west was blowing throughout the afternoon, which made matters rather lively at times for the crews when handling their light Bails. Mishaps of various kinds were reported, tho most sorious being tho fouling of the keclers Waiono and Daisy. These boats got tangled up ofi Orakei, each carryaway their sails. The Marie broke her boom in Rangitoto Channel, and the Soa Sprite collided w:tji the Sandspit beacon and later on capsized near the beacon through her Plato striking bottom. The officials in charge of the racing were Messrs. W. A. Wilkinson, H. Hill, and G. E. Laycock. Details are aa follows:— THE DUNNING CUP. Tho race for the Dunning Cup brought out Victory, Waione, SPeodwell, Waitere 11., Celox, Sadie, Marie, Daisy, Gloriana, Valeria, and Venus. Spinnakers were set for the run down the harbour. At this stage the order of the leaders was: Victory, Waitere 11., Celox. Sadie, Valeria, and Gloriana. Shortly after passing the wharf Daisy and Waione. which were running very close to one another, came into contact, and took no further part in the race. Victory continued her lead, and was first boat round the channel mark, followed by Waitere 11. and Celox, in that order. When they hauled on the wind Victory further increased her lead, finishing a. long way ahead of the other boats. Waitere 11. worked the southern shore, while Celox stood further out in mid-channel, and when tho boats met near the flagship a very excitinz finish was fought out, Waitere. 11. crossing the line 18s ahead of her old rivalMarie broke her beam when holding _ a good position, and gave up. Tho race for tho 14ft one-design _ class caused considerable interest, as the skippers, and crews of the various boats were all under 21 years, Generally speaking the boys handled their boats exceptionally well, although ono or two had trouble with their spinnakers, which, after all, is not an unusual happening even among the older hands. From a good start Iron Duke was first away, closely followed by Rona, Oh 111., Meteor, Viper, and Edna; then came Rex, Nyria, Joan, Rangi, Betty, and All Black, the last-named being lm 30s late. On the run to the first mark Iron Duke was overtaken oy Rona, Ola 111., and Meteor. Rona increased her lead when the boats hauled on the wind after rounding the Sandspit beacon. Passing the mark boat the times of the boats were:—Rona. 4h 14m 55a; Ola 111., 4h 16m 30s; Meteor 4h 16m 10s; Iron Duke, 4h 17m 10s; Joan. 4h 17m 15s; Nyria, 4h 18m ss; Viper. 4h 19m 50s : Betty. 4h 21m 10s; Edna, 4b 22m 10s; Rangi, 4h 25m ss; Rex, 4h 25m 15s; All Blaok. <Ui 29m 10s. After rounding the mark boat Betty dropped her spinnaker overboard, which caused her to drop astern. Rona and Ola 111. continued to race in the same order as in the first round, but there were many changes in the positions of the other boats. Joan overhauled both Meteor and Iron Duke on the run to the Resolution buoy, but after making it she had to give place to Nyria.
