ANNIVERSARY REGATTA

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. SPORTING SPIRIT COMMENDED. The prizes won at the recent Auckland Anniversary Regatta wero presented by Iho Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, at a gathering of yachtsmen and motor-boat owners held at the Navy League rooms last evening. 1 The chairman of t'he Regatta Committee, Mr. J. H. Frater, presided, and said that in spite of general depression the regatta had proved one of the largest and most successful yet held in Auckland. I lie entries were actually a record, no less than 137 sailing boats competing, an increase of 20 over last year. Tho cash prizes totalled £351 2s, and trophies of a total value of £124 were offered. It spoke well for the sporting spirit of tho yachtsmen that although the prize money was lower than that of last year more boats competed in tho various events. He also paid a tribute to the efforts of the Auckland Swimming Centre in providing entertainment for the public. Mr. Gunson. speaking of the support -iven to tho Regatta C'ommittco bv t'he public, said that whiJo this was no doubt due in soma measure to ilie fact that tho regatta was the chief Anniversary Day function, he thought t'he principal reason was that the public had confidence in the officials who organised and controlled the regatta each year. Tho prizes wero then presented. Tho Auckland Harbour Board's Cup for firstclass yachts, won by the Victory, and Captain Ross' cup for 14ft. one-design boats, won by Rona, bad not been received, and will be handed to tho winning crews at a later date. Mr. Gunson congratulated Mr. C. J. Col lings, who won the £100 prize with Pussyfoot in the 21ft. speed boat race, mentioning that he was to be commended for taking so much interest in the initiation of this event, which it was hoped would bo tho forerunner of many others. i The meeting recorded its appreciation i of the services of Mr. Frater, chairman, I Mr. W. D. Ross, secretary, and the members of the committee, who had carried the regatta through with so much success.
