HAUNT OF THE TUATARA.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHDECH, Tuesday. The tuataras on Stephen Island, in Cook Strait, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart states, are increasing much more rapidly than is generally bo'ieved. A party that visited the island this year has reported to him that the reptiles in some parts are in great numbers. It has been suggested that those parts should •be fenced off in order -to encourage the growth of native shrubs to give the tuataras more protection. The worst enemy on the island seems to bo the harrier hawk. The Minister has been advised to place some of the Stepheu Island tuataras on other islands near the coast where there are few natural enemies'
