WOOL IN GOOD DEMAND.

THE WELLINGTON SALE.

, 25,000 BALES OFFERED.

LARGE PROPORTION SOLD.

[by teleqeaph.—press association.]

WELLINGTON. Friday.

There was an old-timo eagerness to buy at tho Wellington wool sale to-day, when some 25,000 bales were offered. Tho first three catalogues amounted to 14,600 bales in the aggregate. The sale being a heavy one started at 8 a.m. and went briskly up to noon. It seemed as though fully 95 per cent, of the wool offered was knocked down in tho room. There are always adjustments to bo mado after tho hammer has fallen, so that with a slight concession bore and there by the buyer in one instance and the vendor in another, it is probable that 97 per cent, of the 25,000 bales offered will have been disposed of by tho time the last lot. is knocked down.

Buyeis were present in force, and while it was noticeable that they were determined to keep strictly to their limits yet they wanted wool and would have it if their prices were met. The wool offered covered a wide range of North Island production and also included some choice Marlborough Merinos. These were well competed for at fully last sale rates, and from 15d to 16£ d was recorded for Merinos. Fair halfbreus sold at from 9Jd to 13|d. Crossbreds, as taken by America, woro in request and were sold at practically last sale rates. Medium crossbreds sent in for sale were not quite up to the quality of those that the Americans were eager to buy at the last sale. There were not so many good parcels offering as in tho January catalogue. The top prices which medium crossbreds attained at the last sale were not noticeablo to-day, but although it cannot be said that there was a quotable fall the quality was not so good. I Speaking generally and referring to the earlier stages of tno sale, coarse crossbreds were about on a par with January rates as to prices, and low crossbreds were in good demand by Bradford, and were rather better in price than the realisations at the last sale, taking quality into account Several buyers had order? for hogget wools, which sold at from Jd to Id above the rates at the January sale, when they were only half-heartedly competed for. "Pieces, bellies, and crutch-1 ings were fully up to last salo rates. The range of prices was as follows: — Merinos: super, to 18d, average, 15Jd to 16Jd; inferior, 13Jd to 14|d. Medium halfbred: super, 12Jd to 131 d, average, lOd to 123 d; inferior, Bjd to lOd. Coarser halfbred: average, 9Jd to 103 d; inferior, 7d to 9d.
