UNKNOWN WARRIOR.
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL.
'ABANDONMENT PROBABLE. [feom oub own correspondent.] SYDNEY, Feb. 8. It is not now likely that the Federal Government will adopt tbe suggestion for the burial of an unknown Australian soldier in Australia. The fact that there is no place in the Commonwealth that stands out beyond compare as do London and Washington in regard to the British Empire and the United States respectively is chiefly responsible for the fact that the matter is to be dropped as regards Australia. It has been pointed out that the tomb of the unknown warrior should be in a place to which annual pilgrimages could conveniently be made. If Canberra were chosen as a site it would bo too far removed from the Australian centres of population, and it is feared that if a proposal were made to establish the tomb in any of the State capitals it would give rise to jealous heartburnings and unseemly squabbling that in relation to such an undertaking would be very deplorable. So the Government does not propose to adopt the suggestion.
