BOOTS ON "APPROVAL."

A HAIRDRESSER'S THEFTS. A hairdresser, Alexander McLean I Steele, aged 34, appeared before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday charged with having stolen four pairs of boots and one pair of shoes, of a total value of £7 15s. Detective Knight produced a statement in which accused said he obtained a pair of boots from .lames Clai-idgc's shop on approval and pawned them. Ho returned to tho shop saying they were not suitable and promising to return them. He obtained another pair on approval and while the shopkeeper was at the back of the shop j stole a pair of lady's shoes. He sold both ; pairs to second-hand dealers. He obtained I two pairs of boots from S. Stone and Co., j Ltd., in a similar manner. He had been I out of work for six weeks. ; Accused pleaded guilty, j Chief-Detective Mcllveney said that I accused's trouble was over indulgence in | drink, and he suggested that if accused j consented he should be sent to Roto Ron I for 12 months. I Accused was convicted and ordered to | come up for sentence when called 'on in 12 months, restitution to be made forthwith, on his consenting to go to Roto Roa | for 12 months.

WEALTHY VAGRANT FINED. Henrv Steel admitted having been found by night without lawful excuse on! enclosed premises in Alexander Street. It was stated that accused had been found ■ there at 2.30 a.m. When questioned ho i said he lived on the premises and after-1 wards that he was staying at an hotel, i Both these statements wore untrue. Accused wa s not short of money as hisj bank book showed he had £400 in the . bank. Ho had been drinking heavily. The magistrate imposed a fine of £5 as a I warning to accused to be more careful in future. TROUBLE OVER A WOMAN.' "It was a fair stand-up fight—over a woman," said Sergeant, Rowell when Edward Campbell and George Hoaly admitted having used threatening behaviour in Franklin Road. Both men showed signs of the encounter. They were each fined £1, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. TWO CASES REMANDED. On charges of having fraudulently omitted to pay to Malcolm Charlcsworth two cheques, for £15 2s 6d and £6 respectively, received on terms requiring him to do so, Roland Watts was remanded for a week. The offences were alleged to have been committed at Te Puke., Andrew Duncan was charged with having stolen two concertinas and case and I other articles of a total value of £15, the property of Thomas Calvert. He was remanded for a week.
