ESSAY COMPETITION.

The annual prize competition for essays by school children on " Kindness to Animals," ig announced by the committee' of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The competition is open to all children attending primary or secondary schools in the Auckland district, and there are four grades, with four prizes in each 'grade. The subject in each grade is set, and every essay must be a bona-fide original composition of the contributor, and should bear an endorsement from the teacher of the fact that the essay has been written without assistance, under the teacher's supervision. Entries must reach the society's office, 20, Palmerston Buildings, not later than March 21.
