THEFTS FROM A LIBRARY.
ADDINGTON'S EXPERIENCE.
" A large amount of thieving has taken place, we are sorry to say," reported tho Acldington Library Committeo to tho annual meeting of subscribers. " Over one hundred books have been missed from the library." "It.is putting it pretty badly to call it thieving," said the Mayor of Christchurch (Dr. Thackcr). " People generally do not thieve books determinedly. They take a book home, and intend to return it, but fail to do so. Then a friend borrows it and also fails to return it So it goes on about ten deep. That is my experience with my books. Tt is a big loss to a library like this, and often it is the best books that are stolen. A «ort of transfer business outside the library goes on because the book is so popular." Dr. Thacker suggested that the librarian should write to the librarian of the Parliamentary library concerning his system of checking books, which was very effective.
