The Secretary for the Navy, Mr. E. Denby, has ordered an immediate reduction of the number of men employed in all navy yards where warship construction is progressing. ■ This order affects men at Philadelphia, New York, Maro Island (California), and Norfolk, where ships are building, also at the Boston and Charleston yards, where armour plating is made. auxiliary craft. Mr. C. E. Hughes, in his statement to the Pan-American Union on the results of the Washington Conference, said: "It is true that we have not succexl&d in effecting the limitation of auxiliary craft, that is limitation by agreement, but in limiting the size and number of capital ships in which competition arul construction was the keenest there has been, in practical result, a limitation of auxiliary craft which will be observed in every country. There will be no disposition to permit extravagant outlays for these purposes.
